5 things to add to your morning routine to be productive

  1. Make your bed

Don’t hate me! I know this one can come across as a little cliché, but making your bed in the morning can make your day feel 10x more productive than any day when you don’t.

One of my favorite youtubers, Sarah Therese, lets her bed breathe for a while before putting on the covers!

I’ve actually found this to be super beneficial! It relieves the weird smell of sweaty sleep from the bed and makes the sheets feel fresher. I like to let my bed breathe while I make breakfast and get ready for my day.

Making my bed is actually one of my final activities in my morning routine. After I put the sheets on, I spray the covers with a lavender mist to make them smell sweet and to help freshen the room!

  1. Read!

I don’t know why I didn’t start this sooner! Reading each morning feels so productive and beneficial. I absolutely love reading in my cozy chair with some warm blankets and a cup of coffee.

I typically read and journal (yes, I do both!) after I’ve finished breakfast and I’m finishing up my coffee.

It’s a really nice private moment in my day that I look forward to. Right now I’m reading Educated by Tara Westover. I will flunctuate, however, between my current read and some religious texts.

A lot of people like to practice a devotional or read the Bible in the mornings. Since I’m not necessarily Christian and I lean towards Wiccan and pagan practices, I’ll read from one of these three books below:

  • Myths & Legends
  • Classical Mythology
  • Celtic Tales of Magic and Enchantment

I also love to journal after I read and finish up my coffee because it helps me to gather my thoughts and practice some writing!

  1. Make a to-do list/plan out your day

So…this list is so out of order! I feel like I’m going backwards through my morning routine!

Anyway, I make lists/plan out my day twice! I do it once at night right before bed and then I do it again while I eat my breakfast.

Sometimes, I’ll make my daily list as breakfast is cooking or before I eat (if I’m feeling like a quiet morning). Other times, I’ll make my list while I eat!

  1. Practice gratitude

This is something that is fairly new to my morning routine. I usually do this while journaling.

After I’ve journalled about whatever is on my mind, I draw a line to separate my writing and I write a list, 1-5. I write down five things that I’m thankful for in the moment.

Sometimes I repeat things, sometimes I skip this part of my day.

It’s something that I’m still getting used to, but I really enjoy it. It makes me feel more positive which is something that is much needed at this time.

  1. Work out/meditation/yoga

This one is a hard one for me! I wish I was motivated to workout every. single. morning. But I’m not!

To compensate, I will do one of these three: work out, meditate, or yoga.

I’ve found that some mornings, I enjoy a slower pace and meditation is really good for that. I can stretch, sit calmly, and clear my mind. Yoga is also very similar and allows for minimal movement but movement nonetheless.

If I don’t work out in the morning, I will most definitely go for a walk later in the day or do a small workout inside!

Getting your body moving and in tune with your surroundings is a great way to feel connected with yourself and your space and makes mornings a little less dreary and tiresome!
