Equipment every blogger should have

If you’re new to blogging, or even if you’ve been blogging for a while, you might be wondering what kinds of equipment are actually worth your investment in the blogging world.

Good news!

I’m here to alleviate the stress and confusion on what is a blogging must and what can wait!

Equipment every blogger should have

Alright, so I want to open this post with it’s own disclaimer: If you are a blogger, the equipment listed below is not necessarily “essential.” You can totally survive the blogging world without them. However, I want to be real with you and let you know that some of these things can be HUGE game-changers for blogging success!

When I first came into the blogging scene, I was lost and ill prepared. I was armed with only a smart phone and my pre-owned laptop. But I made it work! Although, my equipment has significantly increased since entering this mini profession!

Below are the things that I use and deem important for blogging success!

Laptop/computer

This is the most obvious piece of equipment for any blogger and without a doubt the most important. I cannot stress enough the importance of a good working laptop or computer.

When I was looking for a laptop, here were some things I had to keep in mind when shopping around:

  • Affordability
  • A brand known for quality
  • Large memory cards
  • An effective and reliant processor/good processing speed
  • And a decent battery life

Now, I prefer Windows computers over MAC,google, or apple. This already helped me to narrow down my options. I chose an HP laptop with a core i5. I did my research and was able to get a reliable computer that was within my budget (it was refurbished and cost me only $160 give or take).

I’m going to save you the trouble of finding decent computers by linking some below.

These are the closest I could get for the laptop I have. The first is the exact version (refurbished) and the second is the next generation of the one I own:

Hp Elitebook 840 G2 Intel core i5 Laptop

Here’s another kind of laptop (my sister owns this one and we often use it for editing purposes):

Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (intel core i5)

Now, you might be wondering what the difference is between these and which is better. Personally, I like my Hp laptop and it’s much easier to find cheaper versions of it through amazon or ebay. My sister’s Surface Pro is fantastic, however. It’s so efficient to use a stylus and create edits for youtube videos, stock photos, and other graphic design needs.

Are these better than desktop computers?

Yes and no. I think it depends on preference. I like the two desktop computers (my parents and my own) that have served me well. I will honestly say I prefer my laptop, however, because I enjoy moving around and having new scenery when I work!

Apple iMac all-in-one desktop PC

A digital camera

If a laptop is the most important blogging tool, then a digital camera is a close second! I got my digital camera from best buy during my junior year photography class in high school. My camera is a Canon DSLR EOS Rebel T6. Since it is an older model, it doesn’t necessarily have all of the glitz and glamour of newer versions. I’ve had to spend quite a lot on attachments, microphones, extension cords, lenses, etc. in order to produce the quality of photos and videos that I strive for.

Here’s a short list of the attachments I’ve needed (due to the outdated camera):

And here’s an alternative camera option that is newer and provides more tools for a cheaper price!

Lighting

I’m not going to lie, I didn’t invest in better lighting (ring lights) until fairly recently. I took my stock photos during golden hour or whenever I had a sunny day. Or, I would just edit the heck out of my photos to brighten them up (I do not recommend this method!).

I invested in ring lights namely so I could begin a youtube channel. However, I’ve come to realize that they are super-duper helpful for making stock photos and for instagram shots!

Memory cards/flash drive

I’m going to keep this section short (like the one above) because it’s one of those simple equipment needs. Sim cards and flash drives will become your best friends when it comes to saving blog graphics, stock photos, blog posts, digital products, etc. Honestly, invest in a few. I don’t need too much storage for mine, but I like to organize and label each memory saver by what is being saved. I keep my blog posts separate from my graphics, for example.

Décor items (for photos)

Okay, this is my favorite “equipment must-have” in the blogging world. I cannot tell you how eager I’ve been waiting to write this section of my blog post.

I started taking my own stock photos a few months ago and realized that I needed props, backdrops, and products FOR THE PHOTOS! I had no idea how much curation and attention to detail went into this until I began doing it myself.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Canva is still my go-to for blog graphics and free stock images. However, I absolutely love making my own!

Below are some items I invested in for decor/props for my stock photos:

  • Marble background
  • Wood background
  • Faux succulents
  • Faux flower petals
  • Glitter
  • Pens
  • Notebooks
  • Mugs
  • Faux fur

Of course this list goes on! And, I still use a number of weird knick knacks from around the house. I even use my phone and laptop for stock images sometimes!

This is all I could think of in regards to blogging equipment must-haves. I hope it was informative and that I saved you some time and money with these links!
