So, I started writing this post at the end of May, and now it’s June. I’m honestly losing my mind at how fast everything is going. I’m still working on promoting my book and trying to get it into libraries and bookstores. I’ll be moving in the middle of June to a temporary housing situation. Everything is happening all at once! Or so it seems…
I can’t believe I slacked off so much that my May “what I’m reading” is coming out in June…but…it is what it is.
In May, I’ll be honest, I didn’t read as much as I planned to. I finished Stardust by Niel Gaiman and I’m certainly going to give it a proper review this time around. And I’ve read a lot more poetry than ever!
Most of what you’ll see below aren’t traditional books, however, they are important nonetheless!

Stardust by Niel Gaiman
This book was phenomenal! I know. I know. I’m obsessed with Gaiman’s work and this is likely a biased opinion…I walk into every single one of his books expecting greatness and I’m never disappointed.
I’ll admit, it’s not one of my favorites out of what he’s written, but it was very good.
The book follows a young Tristran Thorn on his journey to fetch a star to win the hand of his beloved. Sounds a little simple right? No! He has to fight his way through faerie lands (where the landscape is often just as alive and deceiving as the creatures it harbors) in order to obtain the star, that, doesn’t particularly want to come willingly. Oh, and he’s not the only one looking for it.
Gaiman’s writes fantasy novels with a darker twist. It’s like a fairytale except the narrator exposed all of the dark and twisted parts in the legend.
I don’t know if his writing is your thing, but it’s certainly mine and his books are amazing!
AVA (poetry)
I told you that this “what I’m reading segment” would be a little different. Well, for this writer and the next one, i’ve been reading their stuff online rather than in book form.
I discovered AVA’s poetry on Pinterest, and from there, I ended up following her on Instagram.
Some of her poetry is a bit too modern and simplistic for my taste. However, she has a number of poems that really intrigue and inspire me. She deals with all matters of topics: love, loss, acceptance, freedom, pain, etc. So there’s a variety of poetry to feel connected to at any given time.
I love the poems of hers that weave words in complex and unexpected ways. I love the technicality of poetry just as much as I love meaning. Some of her metaphors are quite unique and I love her freestyle work.
She has recently published a book (that I have not yet checked out) titled: Feast of Flowers.
Excerpts From a Book I’ll Never Write by Nadia Starbinski
I also found this author through Pinterest, as I find most things. Her style is often more prose than poetry. She writes short paragraphs with thoughts or dialogue to narrate a moment/feeling in time.
Before I wrote this blog post, I honestly had no clue that Excerpts From a Book I’ll Never Write was a book! I always thought the line beneath the poetry was an extra statement or something…I’m a little out of it I know. There’s a reason my book is titled as it is.
I encourage you to check out her book or he work on Instagram. Her writing covers a wide range of topics, most notably: love, loss, and acceptance.
I hope this settles as a decent “what I’m reading this month post.” It’s more of a “what I read” but that’s okay!
